Global support for NCD inclusion

16 June 2011 - ADI's ongoing efforts to see dementia included in the forthcoming United Nations Summit on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is receiving strong support from an increasing number of international organisations.

Nine organisations have joined ADI in urging the UN to add ageing and dementia alongside those disease areas already included, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, in the Summit. The Summit, which will take place in September 2011, will involve Heads of State from across the world in a discussion to address the threat posed by NCDs in low- and middle-income countries.

ADI, in collaboration with these nine organisations, have developed a joint statement outlining the necessity for ageing and dementia to be included and the commitments they feel should be made to these causes during the Summit. The organisations in support of this statement are:

  • AARP
  • Age UK
  • Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI)
  • HelpAge International
  • The Global Coalition on Aging
  • The International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing (IAHSA)
  • The International Federation on Ageing (IFA)
  • The International Longevity Centre-UK
  • The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA)
  • The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA)
