First draft of US national plan released

23 February 2012 - The first draft of the USA's National Alzheimer's Plan was released yesterday following the government's recent commitment to fighting the increasing challenge Alzheimer's poses.

Among the draft's planned steps are:

  • The development of a major public awareness campaign to help people know the early warning signs of Alzheimer's and what to do
  • The educatation of doctors and other health workers about recognising Alzheimer's, available medication to ease symptoms and the social services that may help families to cope
  • Improved early detection
  • Better training of caregivers
  • Study how to address the health needs of stressed and isolated caregivers.

The draft will now be available for public review and comment throughout March.
