Encouraging research
10/66 assessment interview, Goa
"Our group in Goa was the first to complete the dementia diagnosis study. The findings have led to the development of dementia-sensitive services including a project to empower carers and the first home in India for people with dementia is being constructed in Goa." Amit Dias, 10/66 researcher, India.
The 10/66 Dementia Research Group aims to redress the fact that less than 10% of all population-based research into dementia has been directed towards the 66% or more of all people with dementia who live in developing parts of the world.
Research carried out by 10/66 Group indicates that dementia in the developing world is a hidden problem. Dementia is not often recognised as a disease because it is seen as a normal part of ageing which means that families do not seek medical help. In addition, pilot research by 10/66 shows that family caregivers in developing countries face major caring commitments, high economic costs and psychological strain due to the multi-generational households in which they live.
The statistics and information gathered by the 10/66 Group is vital to national Alzheimer associations. It helps them to persuade policy makers of the need to provide services for people with dementia and their families as without reliable prevalence figures policy makers often ignore the issue of dementia.
