Raising awareness
World Alzheimer's Day, Poland 2001
"Our World Alzheimer's Day activities have definitely created more awareness about the disease: there has been an increase in telephone calls and letters and more caregivers have joined the caregiver support group." Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation.
By co-ordinating World Alzheimer's Day on 21 September each year ADI helps Alzheimer associations raise awareness about dementia. World Alzheimer's Day campaigns are crucial in many countries where dementia is not yet a recognised condition.
A simple poster can make all the difference. Take Ansar for example, a young man whose father had Alzheimer's disease. He saw a World Alzheimer's Day poster at a maternity clinic and quizzed the doctor about it. She referred him to Alzheimer's Pakistan who gave him ADI's literature. This knowledge helped Ansar to cope with the everyday task of caring and also enabled him to make changes that improved the quality of both his life and his father's.
