World Alzheimer's Day 2001 - News Release

'Diagnosis is the first step to help' says television celebrity Anne Robinson on World Alzheimer's Day

Anne Robinson, Vice President of the Alzheimer's Society (UK) is supporting World Alzheimer's Day on Friday 21 September. Launched in 1994 by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), the umbrella organisation of Alzheimer associations in 57 countries, this international campaign is a reminder that for the world's 18 million people with dementia a diagnosis is the first step to help facilitating access to treatment, information, support and allowing time to plan for the future.

Anne Robinson, whose mother had Alzheimer's disease, says 'It is vital that anyone concerned that they or a member of their family may have dementia come forward for a diagnosis to resolve their anxiety and demystify their condition. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease I contacted the Alzheimer's Society (UK). They saved my life. The information and advice they gave me helped me and my family get through very difficult times'

ADI co-ordinates Alzheimer associations around the world to observe 21 September each year. Events planned include tea days throughout the UK and Scotland, a Memory Walk in Berlin and the Philippines, and a call from the USA for Congress to increase research funds for Alzheimer's disease.
