World Alzheimer's Day 2001
Diagnosing dementia: the first step to help
The theme for World Alzheimer's Day in 2001 centred on the importance of having a diagnosis of dementia. Naming a person's symptoms helps to demystify or destigmatise their condition and may also resolve their anxiety, as well as that of their family. It can maximise a person's quality of life, give a person a greater chance of benefiting from existing treatments, allows the person with dementia and their family access to resources and information, and provides more time to plan for the future.
