World Alzheimer's Day 1997

A race against time

Every second there are even more people in the world with Alzheimer's disease. World Alzheimer's Day™ drew attention to the massive number of people with dementia across the globe and the impact this has on them and the people who care for them.

A charter stating the estimated number of people with dementia in the world was translated into several languages. It formed the main part of a special World Alzheimer's Day bulletin that was distributed worldwide.

Worldwide support was pledged for the campaign, including a message from Nancy Reagan. In a statement for the day she said 'I hope that the message in the charter will increase global awareness and promote understanding about this disease, the people who have it and those who care for them'. Read Nancy Reagan's message in full.

His Holiness Pope Giovanni Paolo II also dedicated a message of solidarity to people with Alzheimer's disease and their families during the ceremony of Angelus on Sunday 21 September. Read the Pope's message (in Italian only)
