On July 13, 2004, Todd's mother, Judy Gelfand, died of Alzheimer's disease. Her terrible nine-year struggle was a channel for many powerful and positive things to take form. Todd's family established The Judy Fund in 2003 in loving memory of Judy Gelfand. The fund supports the work of the US Alzheimer's Association in the hope that dementia will cease to strike down future generations. Through the generosity of family, friends, business colleagues and corporations The Judy Fund has funded nearly $2.4 million in US Association research grants and works closely with local chapters to improve care. In 2004, The Judy Fund sponsored the Pioneer Award, the US Alzheimer's Association's largest annual grant of $1 million, which will fund a five-year study on the quality of care in assisted living facilities, with the goal of establishing a best-practice model for Alzheimer care.

Judy Gelfand's death has been a catalyst for an even more personal journey. Todd is 47, married to his wife Doreen for 25 years and they have three children: Brian, 19, Ilana, 17 and Ben, 10. Todd leads a busy life serving on many community and non-profit boards, in addition to his significant professional commitments. Todd plays tennis, coaches and is the President of the local Little League, and hikes and bikes with his family and friends.

Why climb Kilimanjaro?

Todd will join the Ascent team to honour his mum and all of the mums and dads around the world that fall silent from this disease. He will be part of an achievement that will raise money and awareness to change the life of millions, yet is driven by the power of one woman. Todd looks forward to the view from the top.
