The Alzheimer University

Helping Alzheimer associations to help themselves

The Alzheimer University training programme is a series of workshops designed to build organisational capacity by focusing on the fundamental issues of setting up and running an association.

"The Alzheimer University gave me a new look into the aims and objectives of Alzheimer's Pakistan. We cannot do everything. I think for the moment we work towards raising awareness, education and training. I will go back with a better understanding of how to run my organisation." Hussain Jafri, Pakistan

"This weekend made me realise that there is nothing more motivating than having clearly stated direction and measurable goals." Nilanjana Maulik, India

"All the topics covered have been useful for our work. In the past, we have spent a lot of time doing things that have not worked well. Now we have learnt some useful tools and will be able to work better." Xinia Jiménez, Costa Rica

Module 1 is aimed at new and emerging associations to help them develop the skills to set up an Alzheimer's Association in their country and covers the basics of identifying aims, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, running support groups, raising awareness and providing information. The course also enables participants to develop a simple strategy for their organisation to put three key objectives into action.

ADI financially supports participants to attend this three-day programme in London and provides ongoing support after the course. So far we have invited 24 Alzheimer associations to participate in Module 1 from Belarus, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Slovakia, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey and Ukraine.

Module 2 is run during ADI's annual international conference. The workshops are aimed at all staff and volunteers of Alzheimer associations and cover more advanced organisational issues. The workshops are jointly organised by the conference hosts and ADI, and provide a stimulating learning environment. Topics this year will include structures of organisations, the relationship between staff and volunteers, strategic planning and coping with IT.
