10/66 population-based surveys

The 10/66 Dementia Research Group has always been committed to carrying out larger scale population-based studies in developing countries.

The pilot studies were designed to prepare the way for these surveys by

  1. identifying the best way to diagnose dementia, ensuring that we could make fair comparisons between the different countries and cultures studied
  2. establishing methods for assessing care arrangements for people with dementia, and the impact that caring has upon the lives of the family members.

The aim for the population-based surveys is to:

  • quantify prevalence and incidence rates (estimating the numbers of people with dementia in countries where often no surveys have been carried out)
  • exploring variations in prevalence and incidence in international collaborations using identical and comparable research methods - this could give important clues as to the aetiology (underlying causes) of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
  • describe care arrangements for people with dementia
  • quantify the impact on caregivers of providing care
  • evaluating the effectiveness of any new services implemented for people with dementia and their caregivers
