The 10/66 Dementia Research Group has always been committed to carrying out larger scale population-based studies in developing countries.
The pilot studies were designed to prepare the way for these surveys by
- identifying the best way to diagnose dementia, ensuring that we could make fair comparisons between the different countries and cultures studied
- establishing methods for assessing care arrangements for people with dementia, and the impact that caring has upon the lives of the family members.
The aim for the population-based surveys is to:
- quantify prevalence and incidence rates (estimating the numbers of people with dementia in countries where often no surveys have been carried out)
- exploring variations in prevalence and incidence in international collaborations using identical and comparable research methods - this could give important clues as to the aetiology (underlying causes) of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
- describe care arrangements for people with dementia
- quantify the impact on caregivers of providing care
- evaluating the effectiveness of any new services implemented for people with dementia and their caregivers
