10/66 pilot studies

The 10/66 group had an article published in the 15 March 2003 issue of The Lancet. The article describes the dementia diagnosis pilot studies. You can read the article at The Lancet website.

The dementia diagnosis pilot studies have been used to establish a method for diagnosing dementia in populations with very little formal education. These pilot studies have been completed in 25 centres worldwide allowing fair comparisons between rates of dementia in very different countries and cultures to be made.

The 10/66 research program has also made a preliminary study of the care arrangements for people with dementia in the developing world, the impact upon their caregivers, and the common behaviour problems that they encounter.

The 10/66 Pilot studies have been completed in 25 centres worldwide (the red circles on the world map below). 7 are in India, 14 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 3 in China and SE Asia, and one in Africa

Several other centres are planning to carry out the pilot study, these are marked with green circles. These included developed countries, countries in the Arab world, Russia, South Africa and Indonesia.
